19 August: Guatemala babyyy!

So we crossed the border from Belize to Guatemala today, it was pretty much the same as what we went through at the Mexico/Belize border. More dodgy dealings with the locals to change our currency over to the Guatemalan quetzal, unfortunately this time we weren't so lucky with the people who exchanged our money as we all lost out and got a lot less than we should have.

Afterwards we continued our journey further into Guatemala and stopped for lunch at Lake Pėten Itza; the "third largest lake" in Guatemala. I've got to say if this is the third largest, I can't imagine how big the first and second ones are. The views here were incredible. The water was so clear and the leaves were so green, it was like paradise. Even more so than Caye Caulker.

Sadly we had to leave this beautiful place and move onto Tikal, here was where we'd be camping for the night... I was quite excited for the camping, I love going camping in England and I said goodbye to make up and nice hair back on the fourth day, so this should be fine. Ha, ok so it wasn't unbearable, but the night didn't start off well when I went to shower and there was a spider (with fangs) about the size of my hand hanging out on the ceiling (ie the tin can roof). So after we got Davi to kill the smaller spider in the men's shower, myself and Erica decided to brave it, leaving the door open so we could bolt out should we need to. I feel sorry for the couples, who's tents were pitched up near to the showers and who had to hear our incessant whining and screaming, sorry guys!

Oh forgot to mention we went on a three hour trek up and around the Tikal ruins, which may I add, featured in about 7 seconds of Star Wars IV (just after Princess Leia got rescued I think).

Selfie from on top of a Tikal temple, just because...

We learnt that to uncover the whole of the Mayan village which most of it is still buried under vegetation would take around two or three hundred years and that's if they're working 24/7. So they aren't in any rush.

So back to the camping...

So we'd finished the shower and survived 🙌🏻 we brushed our teeth and survived. We then started to make it back to the tents when we found a group of campsite workers huddled around the patio. They were only trying to coax a giant tarantula out of its nest. Ay dìos mio! (Oh my god, I think). If you know me I'm scared of only two things, spiders and well the other one I only tell close friends because they won't judge me haha.

I have to admit I was a little bit fascinated and so I hung around just to see if there was one really there and yup sure enough after a few prods with a stick she emerged all big and black and hairy (and probably a bit pissed off). This put my previous shower spider to shame. I ran off screaming fuck that and hid in my tent. Even when I woke in the night bathed in sweat from the humidity in my tent, I refused to open the door.

Then came the five o'clock wake up call from the howler monkeys, when I got up in the morning I said it sounded like I was in Jurassic Park, our guide then said well yes it would because they used the call of the howler monkey to make the tyrannosaurus rex's roar. So go listen to that on YouTube and then imagine hundreds of those screeching from the trees in the jungle in the pitch black and tell me how you'd feel.... Scared yet? Thankfully we'd heard them before so once the initial fear of being woken so unexpectedly by such a terrifying scream dissipated, I went back to sleep.

I won't lie, I was glad when we got into our air conditioned mini van and left the campsite in our dust...

XOXO
